Latvian verb conjugation: I

Verbs are used to describe actions. Latvian verbs are conjugated for each person. The conjugation consists of an ending placed on the verb stem. For the first person singular, Latvian verbs typically use the ending '-u'.

Verbs are used to describe actions. There are 1000's of verbs that you can learn in Latvian. A good approach would be to start out by learning just three Latvian verbs by heart. We suggest you learn the Latvian verbs skatīties, vēlēties and patikt (see, want, like). Using the nouns grāmata , krēsls and durvis (book, chair, door) which you learned in Step 3, learn to use each verb with each noun (I want the book, you see the chair, they like the door etc.). You can scroll to the top of this page to see a short lesson about Latvian verbs including useful examples. After you've learned using the three verbs skatīties, vēlēties and patikt by heart you can move on to Step 9 (Latvian possessive pronouns).
