The definite article is what we call the word 'the' in English. The definite article is used with nouns. The English definite article 'the' has various forms in Maltese. Depending on the first letter of the word which follows, the various forms are 'il-', 'it-', 'id-', 'ix-' and 'l-'.

The nouns together with the definite article are il-ktieb, is-siġġu and il-bieb (the book, the chair, the door).
