Portu­guese verb conjugation: I

Verbs are used to describe actions. Portuguese verbs are conjugated for each person. The conjugation consists of an ending placed on the verb stem. For the first person singular, Portuguese verbs typically use the ending '-o'. Important to note is that pronouns are not used with the verb in Portuguese except to create emphasis. This means that, unlike English, the verb is in general used without a pronoun.

Step 8 : Portu­guese verbs

Verbs are used to describe actions. There are 1000's of verbs that you can learn in Portuguese. A good approach would be to start out by learning just three Portuguese verbs by heart. We suggest you learn the Portuguese verbs ver, querer and gostar (see, want, like). Using the nouns livro, cadeira and porta (book, chair, door) which you learned in Step 3, learn to use each verb with each noun (I want the book, you see the chair, they like the door etc.). You can scroll to the top of this page to see a short lesson about Portuguese verbs including useful examples. After you've learned using the three verbs ver, querer and gostar by heart you can move on to Step 9 (Portuguese possessive pronouns).
