Simple German sentences

In a typical sentence in German which uses the verb 'to be', the verb is placed between the subject and the attribute as in English. In the singular, the verb 'to be' is 'ist'. In the plural, the verb 'to be' is 'sind'.

Examples

Der Mann ist traurig.

The man is sad.

Der Mann ist glücklich.

The man is happy.

Der Mann ist gutaussehend.

The man is handsome.

Der Mann ist stark.

The man is strong.

Der Mann ist jung.

The man is young.
