Simple Tagalog sentences

Where an English sentence would use the verb 'to be', a typical sentence in Tagalog does not use a verb at all. The attribute is simply placed in front of the subject, without a verb (i.e. 'Big the horse'). It is also possible to place the subject before the attribute as in English (i.e. 'The horse is big'). In this case the linking word 'ay' is used.

Examples of simple Tagalog sentences

Matanda ang lalaki.
The man is old.
Maliit ang batang babae.
The girl is small.
Ang kabayo ay malaki.
The horse is big.
Ang batang lalaki ay malaki.
The boy is big.
Maliit ang bahay.
The house is small.
