The plural is used, in general, to talk about more than one object. Examples in English would be 'dogs', 'cats', 'houses' and 'children'. The are several ways to form the plural in German. One common way to form the plural is to add '-er' to the end of the word. Another common way to form the plural is to add '-en' to the end of the word.

Step 5 : The plural in German

The plural is important in German when you need to talk about more than one thing. Using the nouns Buch, Stuhl and Tür (book, chair, door) which you learned in Step 3, learn the plural of each of these words by heart. The plural forms are Bücher, Stühle and Türen. Now learn how to use each of these German plural nouns with the definite article. The nouns together with the definite article are die Bücher, die Stühle and die Türen (the books, the chairs, the doors). After you've learned the plural of Buch, Stuhl and Tür, you can move on to Step 6 (German demonstrative pronouns).
