Finnish adjectives

Adjectives are generally used to describe nouns. Adjectives come before the noun in Finnish as in English. Adjectives in Finnish agree with the noun they describe. This means that adjectives that describe a feminine noun have a special form.

Step 7 : Adjectives in Finnish

Adjectives are used to describe nouns. To get started, we suggest you learn the three Finnish adjectives iso, pieni and vanha (big, small, old). Using the nouns kirja, tuoli and ovi (book, chair, door) which you learned in Step 3, learn to use each adjective with each noun (the big book, the old chair, the small door). You can scroll to the top of this page to see a short lesson about Finnish adjectives including useful examples. After you've learned to use the adjectives iso, pieni and vanha with the nouns kirja, tuoli and ovi you can move on to Step 8 (Finnish Verbs).
